Renee Hobbs: We're looking forward to hearing from teachers as they try out the activities in the Assignment: Media Literacy curriculum! Share your experiences here! ---------------- Michael Kandel Mineola Middle School Nassau County, New York Elementary School NOVICE TEACHER SEEKS MEDIA LITERACY KIT! At the suggestion of Lynn Widdowson I am writing to you teacher to teacher. I was fortunate to come across your state’s wonderful Media Literacy curriculum, but am stymied by the unavailability of the accompanying video and assorted materials. I teach in Nassau County, a New York City suburb. After Ms. Widdowson explained that the materials were not produced in enough of a quantity for out-of-state distribution she was kind enough to SUGGEST THAT SOME KIND SOUL WOULD HELP! I am a novice educator and would be grateful for your input. Usually I teach sixth grade ELA and social studies but I will begin teaching a media literacy course this month for elementary students in grades 3-5. Is there any way for me to borrow a copy of your video and kit? I will certainly arrange to cover all of the shipping costs. In addition can we speak about your experience working with these units? My school address and numbers follow. With many thanks for any assistance that you can offer. I am Sincerely Michael Kandel ---------------- Jennifer Ulbrich: I am currently preparing for a class on media literacy, geared for 3-5 graders. I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across you site. You have the most thorough information and activities I have yet to find, on-line and elsewhere. I greatly appreciate being able to down-load the entire curriculum. What a treat! However, I am itching to get a hold of the supporting materials (videos and photocards), as these seem to add quite a bit to the program. If these materials are available for purchase I would be very interested in buying them. If not, is it possible to borrow the materials, with any necessary shipping/loan fees being paid by me? My students have a very unique opportunity, as they will be focusing on media literacy all day for five days in a row (Though it seems that this time will just make a dent in what can/should be covered.). Yes, we stop the normal routine and study just one subject for the whole week. This week is called Intensive Week and boy is it intense! What is possibly even more unique is that the students have numerous choices as to which type of class they would like to participate in for the week. Therefore, the students who are involved in each class are typically there because they have an interest in the topic (though this is a topic that all students need to learn about). I will be content with using what is generously available on-line, but would love to complete the curriculum with the other materials, making this Intensive Week even more valuable. Please let me know if this a possibility. Many Thanks, Jennifer Ulbrich ---------------- Maureen Monroe Minneapolis Middle School I am a Media Specialist in the Minneapolis Public Schools and would love to know how I could purchase an Assignment Media Literacy Kit for middle grades. The curriculum looks great.
